Brian St Pierre wrote a great article on how to sleep well. To summarize, he recommends that you:
- Optimize your sleep environment
- Follow a lifestyle that supports good sleep
- Prepare for sleep
You see, sleep is a critical part of your fat loss puzzle.
If you sleep well, you handle carbs better, lose weight faster and have fewer cravings.
What else can you do to enjoy a great night’s sleep?
1.) Write out what you’re grateful for
If you’re like me, and struggle to wind down at night, writing in a journal to centre your mind and calm it down can be a really useful tool. It gives you an opportunity to relax and wind down from the day. Focus on what is good about your life and instead of feeling stressed and awake, you might feel relaxed and calm. A daily gratitude journalling exercise is a great way to do this.
2.) Use technology to improve your sleep
Hacking your sleep is interesting.
In the past, if you had sleep problems you would have to go to an expensive sleep centre and spend a night under observation.
Of course, this is still an option and a necessity if you have a condition like sleep apnoea.
But what if you just periodically struggle to fall asleep?
We now have access to tools that can help us to do this, simply and cheaply.
My favourite sleep device is this one:
This cool little tool helps to activate the relaxation response. So it will help you to get to sleep quickly or fall back asleep if you wake up through the night. Try it out, it really works.
3.) Sleep well with nature’s muscle relaxant
Magnesium is nature’s muscle relaxant.
Most of us don’t get enough of it.
Magnesium will help with sleep and anxiety: 400 – 800 mg a day is a good dose.
If you take this as a supplement, make sure that you get a magnesium bonded to an –ate (like magnesium citrate, glycinate, orotate).
Another way to increase your magnesium levels is to have a bath in Epsom salts – the hot water will help you to relax and the magnesium will be absorbed through your skin.
The bottom line
Just because you exercise and eat healthy it doesn’t mean you’re doing everything to maximize health and fat loss.
Learn how to sleep well – it is one of the most important things you can do.
If you follow these strategies, you will be sleeping better than you ever have. What do you think?
